behind bars

I had to do my first euthanasia as a real doctor this pat week and it sucked. very sad. Had a birthday on Tuesday, that was nice...went out to celebrate last night...got drunk...feeling old. Happy birthday to Herschel.
I have taken another job working on my day off each week to teach female inmates at the metro state women's prison how to be veterinary assistants as they raise a puppy for the Guide Dog Foundation of America. pretty interesting to say the least. it is a maximum security prison and even my lunch has to go through the xray thing. weird. the women have march to chow and even call a cadence. last week it was "hip hop and lolly pops....let me here that left foot drop, left, right, left, right, left" and so on. it echos out into the parking lot. anyway, it pays well and they are eager to have an instructor. i will probaly only do it until december when my cousin can teach the program full time. it is making me tired to work 6 days a week. damn school loan payments!!!

happenings...

so things have been good...still no spays or neuters, but i have done a cystotomy (removed bladder stones) in a cat, done a splenectomy on a dog, and put an esphogostomy tube (feeding tube) in a cat. pretty fun stuff. i turn 33 next week. not a bad thing really until i remember that i am currently living with my parents. boo. saving money is good, but sometimes poor is less stressful :-) Cosmo had knee surgery last week to remove the plate that was put in last year. he is recovering well and hates his e-collar. his staples come out next week so that will make us both happy.

i can't wait to see more pictures of wee!!!!

One hungry snake

This photo was sent to one of our technicians here at the clinic from his friend who is a vet in Argentina in 2005. He was called to examine an anaconda that the villagers had recently killed. When he opened it up he found this....

Carpet Muncher

That is what the woman called her dog who decided to eat a large square of Berber carpet on Friday night. "Zoe" then preceded to vomit the rest of the weekend and her mom called me at the hospital on Monday afternoon. I convinced her to bring "Zoe" in so I could examine her and take some radiographs and a barium series. The dog was happy, bright and alert and a bit dehydrated. So I gave her subQ fluids and did the barium series. The barium passed normally over the next 24 hours. I offered her food and water which she ate and then violently vomited 3 hours later. So off to surgery we went, and by "we" I mean myself, the dog, and the other new graduate from Auburn. Surgical experience between the 2 of us totalled a whopping 3 months. I have not even neutered anything since graduation and I found myself right in the middle of an ex-lap. 2 hours later I had done 3 enterotomies and remove 3 and 1/2 feet of carpet string. It was awesome!!!! It stretched from the pylorus all the way to the colon. Thankfully the intestines were healthy and the dog recovered and is doing well. She ate today and has not vomited! Amazing.

Cosmo and I went to the orthopedist at GVS today and they tapped his right stifle and it was full of effusion. I sent it off for cytology and culture and they are recommending that the TPLO plate be removed. I guess I will schedule it for sometime I the next 2 weeks. I'm not sure how it will help, but I guess exploring the stifle wouldn't be a bad idea.

I'll keep you posted...

doctor for a week

well, my career has been in full swing for 7 days. i have successfully treated one case of yeast infected ears and one case of itchy skin. summer has arrived. i saw an 11 year old intact male dog whose owner informed me that the dog had not has sex in 10 years. nice. cosmo has been limping on the leg he has previously has a TPLO procedure done on (repair for a ruptured cruciate). i am taking him in tomorrow for some radiographs. if he needs surgery again, budsberg owes me $2000!

Well wishes for the Chambers family. I'm thinking of you.

Updates: Nadal and Henin were winner in Paris. Wimbledon coverage begins June 30th.
