Carpet Muncher

That is what the woman called her dog who decided to eat a large square of Berber carpet on Friday night. "Zoe" then preceded to vomit the rest of the weekend and her mom called me at the hospital on Monday afternoon. I convinced her to bring "Zoe" in so I could examine her and take some radiographs and a barium series. The dog was happy, bright and alert and a bit dehydrated. So I gave her subQ fluids and did the barium series. The barium passed normally over the next 24 hours. I offered her food and water which she ate and then violently vomited 3 hours later. So off to surgery we went, and by "we" I mean myself, the dog, and the other new graduate from Auburn. Surgical experience between the 2 of us totalled a whopping 3 months. I have not even neutered anything since graduation and I found myself right in the middle of an ex-lap. 2 hours later I had done 3 enterotomies and remove 3 and 1/2 feet of carpet string. It was awesome!!!! It stretched from the pylorus all the way to the colon. Thankfully the intestines were healthy and the dog recovered and is doing well. She ate today and has not vomited! Amazing.

Cosmo and I went to the orthopedist at GVS today and they tapped his right stifle and it was full of effusion. I sent it off for cytology and culture and they are recommending that the TPLO plate be removed. I guess I will schedule it for sometime I the next 2 weeks. I'm not sure how it will help, but I guess exploring the stifle wouldn't be a bad idea.

I'll keep you posted...
